With experts drawn from the Unit of Clinical Infectious Diseases at the Department of Clinical Medicine among others, CEMA is involved in a range of clinical research projects with several partners. The aim is to generate local data that informs clinical practice and policy. Our clinical research work spans several areas: COVID-19 antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship and HIV.

    • Ombajo L.A (PI, collaboration with Drs Thumbi Mwangi-UoN and Shikoh Gitau-Qhala limited) 05/2020 – 05/2022 (Funding: Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) 
      Project title: Kenya Data for Health: optimizing COVID-19 responses through data.
      Summary: This project is focused on infectious disease modelling for COVID-19 in Kenya to inform government responses to the disease in Kenya, data analysis and monitoring of non-COVID-19 health metrics to understand and estimate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on health, and the analysis and visualization of health data to aid in decision making in Kenya.

      Project title: B/F/TAF elderly study: Switching virally suppressed HIV-1 infected elderly adults (age≥60 years) without prior confirmed virological failure from current ARV regimen to B/F/TAF: An Open-Label Randomised Controlled Trial.
       

    • Ombajo L.A Young Investigator Award - Biomerieux/KAVI-ICR for research on Animicrobial resistance.
      Summary: This award supports on-going work on antimicrobial resistance in Kenya with a focus on improving understanding of Candida auris prevention in critical care units.
