Intensive Short Course: Mathematical Modelling for Vaccine-preventable Diseases

The Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium (VIMC) and the Center for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA) at the University of Nairobi are excited to announce an intensive 6-day short course on Mathematical Modelling for Vaccine-preventable Diseases. This course is specifically designed for participants from low and middle-income countries and will be held in Nairobi, Kenya from 9-15 September 2024.

Course Overview

This comprehensive program combines lectures, discussions, and seminars with a series of in-depth practical sessions. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the underlying theory and have the opportunity to put these approaches into practice. The course will use the open-source programming language R and is suitable for life scientists, public health professionals, medical practitioners, and veterinary professionals based in low- or middle-income countries who are interested in learning quantitative approaches to infectious disease dynamics and control through vaccination.

Key Features

  • Refresher on Calculus and Introduction to Programming: The course begins with a refresher on calculus and an introduction to computer programming from first principles.
  • Practical Sessions: Extensive hands-on sessions to facilitate the understanding and application of mathematical modelling techniques.
  • Focus on R Programming: Participants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the basics of R (data analysis, vector manipulation, and graphics) before attending.
  • Pre-reading Material: Essential pre-reading on basic mathematical methods will be provided to ensure participants are well-prepared.

Target Audience

The course is aimed at individuals whose existing work or research involves the use of models or interactions with modellers, with a focus on vaccine-preventable diseases. Priority will be given to applicants whose projects align with these criteria.

Sponsorship and Bursaries

The course is sponsored by the Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium, supported by Gavi, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and The Wellcome Trust. It is offered free of charge to selected participants. Additionally, travel bursaries will be available to assist participants with travel expenses.
