Dr. Paula Christen

Biography

Paula is an interdisciplinary social scientist and epidemiologist specialized in researching evidence-informed decision-making in the context of infectious disease control policies and programmes. She is interested in working across disciplines in which knowledge translation from advanced analytics to policy can be harnessed, including the intersection of infectious disease, climate change and health systems strengthening. She is a post-doctoral research fellow at Imperial College London, hosted by the Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA) at the University of Nairobi. While at CEMA, her research aims to define unmet needs around epidemic forecasting, and develop user-friendly frameworks and software tools for forecast evaluation and interpretation to address unmet needs at the science-policy interface for end-users in resource constrained settings. Through her work with the COVID-19 team at Imperial College London, and as a consultant to the UK Health Security Agency and the World Health Organization, Paula has substantial experience supporting pandemic response. In her PhD, she explored knowledge translation from science in the context of vaccination programmes at the global and national levels (with a focus on the HPV vaccine introduction in Mozambique). Paula holds an MSc in Epidemiology and an MSc in Business Analytics/Data Science, both from Imperial College London.
