Benedict Mueke Muma is an Infectious Disease Modelling Fellow (2025) at the Center for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA), University of Nairobi. He is currently conducting a modelling study entitled “Analysis of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis Cases in Makueni County, Kenya: Patterns and Treatment Outcomes” as part of the 2025 CEMA fellowship, focusing on drug-resistant tuberculosis as an example of a pandemic-prone disease.
Benedict holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Epidemiology and Disease Control from Kenyatta University. He has also earned several professional certificates, including the Basic Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program and the Intermediate Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program, both awarded by the Ministry of Health – Kenya. In addition, he holds a certificate in the Principles of Implementation Research from Kenyatta University and the University of Ghana, a certificate in Incorporating an Intersectional Gender Perspective in Implementation Research from TDR (UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO), and a certificate in How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper from TEPHINET/CDC.
He is a passionate and visionary registered public health officer with thirteen years of experience in the Ministry of Health, where he has implemented and advocated for preventive and promotive health services in Makueni County. Benedict has extensive experience in coordinating disease surveillance programs for conditions of public health importance within the county. He has also gained valuable expertise through collaborations with various partners in managing preventive health programs, including active case searches for diseases of public health interest (such as Measles, Acute Flaccid Paralysis, and Neonatal Tetanus), Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Event-Based Surveillance (EBS), and Epidemic Preparedness in Communities (EPiC).
Outside of work, Benedict enjoys pixie fruit farming, traveling, swimming, and exploring different cultures.
