Dr. Raphael Chimweli Nyawa, is a fellow at the Center for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA), under the infectious disease modelling and data analysis fellowship program. He is a male Kenyan citizen with more than eight (8) years of experience working in government; both county (devolved) and national governments. He has also worked in the private and non-governmental organizations (NGO) for over 3 years. Dr. Chimweli is a researcher and a global award winner for the World Food Forum special prize award on Pete des Petits Ruminants (PPR) special issue, youth transformative research competition (TRC) of the year 2022. He is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), holding a Masters in Applied Microbiology and further trainings on Field epidemiology and One health approach. He is well acquitted and have competencies in animal health in general, food security, zoonosis, anti-microbial resistance, animal welfare, wildlife disease, microbiology, environmental health, disease surveillance, field epidemiology, data analysis, public health and application of the One Health approach. He is endowed with vast experiences and skills in disease control designing, disease outbreak investigation, protocol development, excel and epi-info data analysis, scientific reports writing, writing abstracts and posters for scientific dissemination. He is also passionate about field epidemiology, one health practice and mentoring other up-coming young researchers.

Dr. Chimweli is also a Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training (FELTP) Resident and currently working with the National Public Health Institute at the Zoonotic disease unit (ZDU) as an epidemiologist. His work is at the NPHI includes; Data management for; human and animal health (Data collection tools design, data collection, analysis and interpretation), Disease outbreak investigation, Proposal writing, One health routine data analysis and reporting, Routine Data quality audits through field visits, Training and capacity building One health Trainings, Abstract and manuscript developments and projects monitoring & evaluation and technical briefs on zoonoses.

Outside of work, Dr. Chimweli is a mentor for the intermediate FETP program for junior epidemiologists, likes reading, making new friends, exploring different environmental settings and service to the community
